SE Asia still has large populations of green and hawksbill turtles, and in areas such as Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, and Pulau Weh, Sumatra, sightings are guaranteed. The Pacific leatherback on the other hand is now very rare – the population is estimated at around 4,000 animals. The nesting beaches of West Papua and Papua New Guinea are some of the last strongholds of this remarkable and elusive species.
