Reef, Exploring the Underwater World – Dorling Kindersley

Although they cover only one percent of the Earth’s surface, reefs are home to more than 25 percent of all marine fish species. They are the largest living structures on the planet, created over millennia by countless tiny organisms. Reef is your opportunity to discover some of the most incredible wildlife habitats on the planet. Coral reefs are often called “the rainforests of the sea” because of the quantity and diversity of life they support, and because they are highly sensitive and threatened ecosystems. Building on the success of DK’s Rainforest, this unique pictorial celebration of the world’s reefs progresses through an ecological chain that goes from algae, sponges, and mollusks to the thousands of fishes that make their homes there. This vivid collection of photographs, from underwater photography collective Scubazoo, reveals reefs as they’ve never been seen before.
My best guess is Reef should jump to the head of the class when judged at various competitions around the world this year. Even if it doesn’t manage to win, it’s certain to wow the toughest judges – the buying public – and make it one of the year’s best-selling underwater coffee table books, and a wonderful addition to your collection. – David Espinosa, Editor Australasian Scuba Diver
“I recently received a review copy of the new book put out by DK Publishing called simply “Reef.” Before even spending 5 minutes with the book, all I could say was – WOW! The photography, contributed by Scubazoo, is nothing short of amazing. I cuold spend hours flipping through the pages of this book. It’s almost painful as it is giving me the scuba diving “bug” – I’m so inspired by these photos and I’m also impressed by the identification, common and scientific names, of all of the creatures featured. The site where each photograph was taken is also listed, along with information on the behavior or other characteristics displayed in the photos. This brilliant photographic compilation by small Malaysian-based diving collective ScubaZoo introduces the ecology of oceanic reefs, both temperate and tropical. Though technological advances and the devastation of global reefs have spurred many experienced diver-photographers to publish photo collections, the dazzling photography in this one stands out dramatically, as does its inclusion of images made simultaneously by still and video photographers (the book includes a DVD.) The photographs allow close study of coral, fish, crustaceans and many other enchanting creatures, while the video shows the vivid activity of the reef habitat. The helpful text provides a solid introduction to reef ecology, divided into reef landscapes, their inhabitants’ survival behaviors, conservation issues and a broader look at reefs worldwide.” – Joni Lawrence, MarineBioBlog
“Starred Review. This brilliant photographic compilation by small Malaysian-based diving collective ScubaZoo introduces the ecology of oceanic reefs, both temperate and tropical. The helpful text provides a solid introduction to reef ecology, divided into reef landscapes, their inhabitants’ survival behaviors, conservation issues and a broader look at reefs worldwide. The sole problem with the book is the lack of scale indications: it’s hard to tell if a given animal is minute or enormous. But this is a small quibble: the book provides an excellent introduction to fragile reef ecosystems.” – Publishers Weekly Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai, Sabah’s Underwater Treasure – Natural History Publications
Writer and contributing photographer. Please email me if you would like to purchase a signed copy of this book.
On the northeast coast of Sabah, Malaysia, lie three seemingly insignificant islands. Ignored by the rest of the world until the 1980s, it has only recently been discovered that these islands combined play host to one of the most diverse underwater ecosystems in the world. From tiny pygmy seahorses and giant manta rays, to fragile coral reefs and the mysterious `Turtle Tomb’, this marine treasure triangle has it all.
Sipadan Mabul Kapalai: Sabah’s Underwater Treasure documents this remarkable ecosystem. It is the product of five passionate divers who have spent the past seven years living and diving on and around these islands. With its exceptional images and detailed text, this book provides a fascinating insight into the day-to-day existence and activities of the flora and fauna that make these islands their home.
Without doubt, the islands of Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai together represent one of the ultimate destinations for the discerning diver. Currently protected under Malaysian law, it is hoped that the island of Sipadan will soon be recognized internationally and be listed as a World Heritage Site. Certainly, environmental impacts such as global climate change, overfishing and deforestation could take their toll on this delicately balanced ecosystems. It is now up to us to ensure that this book remains a window into the incredible marine ecosystems of the area, and does not become a testimony to past beauty and biodiversity.
