Know of an exciting marine conservation story..?

I am in the midst of putting together a pitch to a big conservation/environment organisation for photo features and multimedia pieces that will be used as part of a new information portal focused on the oceans and their management as natural resources.  This project looks like it will be a fantastic opportunity to highlight interesting stories in SE Asia; the portal is likely to get a huge amount of media attention and is going to be heavily promoted around the world.

Whilst I have several of my own ideas, it would be great to hear of any other possibilities.  What I am looking for are good stories that illustrate the consequences of mismanagement of marine/coastal natural resources, as well as potential or implemented solutions.  For instance, a great example might be an artisanal fishing community that has been impacted by unregulated, industrial-scale commercial fishing in the past, but has then gone on to set up and manage its own marine protected area.

It would also be great to hear of any current projects in SE Asia that are involved in marine and coastal resource management, or if you are directly involved in one yourself, get in touch and let me know.

Ideally I am looking for the following:

  • Stories or projects must be in SE Asia;
  • Stories should illustrate the consequences of mismanagement of marine/coastal resources, and if possible, how these problems can be resolved;
  • Projects must be directly involved in resource management at a community level – ie working in the villages.

I see this as an opportunity to get some exposure for interesting projects in the region, so if anyone has any suggestions, ideas or possibilities, please get in touch – drop me an email or leave a comment below.
