Back from the bush…

I am sitting in Wau, southern Sudan, showering lots and getting rid of dust from my gear, having spent the last week in the small village of Luonyaker to the north west of Wau.  I’ll be heading to Nairobi on Saturday after an overnight in Juba tomorrow night.  Then straight on down to Tanzania for another week or so of shooting.

Sudan is in the middle of some interesting times with the first democratic elections for many years starting in a few days.  Without a press badge or similar, I have decided to get out before the elections – although the risk of violence in the next few weeks is slim, I am not keen on getting stuck here should there be problems with flights etc.  Instead, I’ll watch the news and hope that the country remains calm.

Physically, the last week has been very difficult.  Temperatures have been around 40C in the shade and I have slept little – just too hot at night.  I was staying in an NGO compound with a broken generator, so no fans, showers or cold drinks to offer any sort of respite from the heat.  I am still amazed that the Dinka that live in the village can cope with the conditions so easily!

Photos to come at the end of the month.  Till then, a quick and dirty b&w conversion…. A young Dinka boy in a newly built classroom at the Marol Academy – ‘A girl’s school that boys can attend as well.’
